Restaurants with Eiffel Tower views

All of these places have an Eiffel Tower view. But they do not show it the same way. Three questions are enough to decide.

• Do you want to see the whole Tower, head-on? Then stay at the Trocadéro. From the terrace of Café de l'Homme or Girafe, the Tower stands right in front of you, from base to tip, over the gardens and the Seine. That is the postcard view.
• Do you want to dine inside the Tower? Madame Brasserie (1st floor) and Le Jules Verne (2nd floor) give you a view of Paris from the Tower. Keep in mind: seated inside, you do not see the Tower itself. You see the Seine, the Trocadéro and the Champ de Mars.
• What kind of evening? For a special occasion, aim for the fine-dining tables: Le Jules Verne, L'Oiseau Blanc or 6 New York. For a night that runs late, Girafe serves dinner until 2 a.m. and Kinugawa Rive Gauche has its cocktail bar. For a simple meal facing the Tower, Café du Trocadéro or the Francette barge will do.

One last factor: distance. Café de l'Homme, Girafe and Café du Trocadéro are on the square, at the Trocadéro metro exit. Les Ombres, the Tower and the boats are across the Pont d'Iéna, about a ten-minute walk down.

The right moment is sunset. A concrete example: in late September, the sun sets around 7:30 p.m. in Paris. Book for 6:45 or 7 p.m., and you will see three shows during your meal.

• The evening light. From the Trocadéro, the sun sets behind you. The Tower, in front of you, turns golden.
• The golden lighting. At nightfall, the Tower lights up.
• The sparkle. Every hour on the hour, for 5 minutes, 20,000 bulbs make the Tower sparkle. The first one happens on the first full hour after nightfall. Full schedule: Eiffel Tower sparkle.

In June, the sun sets around 10 p.m. So the first sparkle is not before 11 p.m.: plan a late dinner. In winter, night falls early and a 7 p.m. dinner is enough to see it all.

Everyone wants the terrace, and it is rarely guaranteed. Here is how it works, place by place.

• Café de l'Homme: the only one that sells a guaranteed view. Its "à la carte" terrace option costs a supplement of 60 euros per person, with a glass of Champagne and a guaranteed Eiffel Tower view.
• Madame Brasserie: the restaurant states that you cannot choose your table. The booking includes the ride up to the 1st floor.
• The other places: book early, then write "table facing the Eiffel Tower, on the terrace if possible" in the booking notes. It is not a guarantee.

Mind the weather: in rain or wind, a terrace may close. The glass-walled dining rooms (Les Ombres, L'Oiseau Blanc, Ducasse sur Seine) keep the view whatever the weather. At Le Jules Verne, a jacket is required for men.

The view comes at a price, but not the same price everywhere. The places fall into three groups.

• Affordable: the brasseries on the square, such as Café du Trocadéro, open from breakfast to dinner, and the Francette barge. A simple coffee on a terrace facing the Tower is possible there.
• Mid-range: Girafe, Monsieur Bleu, Les Ombres, Kinugawa Rive Gauche, Madame Brasserie. At Café de l'Homme, view packages start at 75 euros per person at lunch (second row of the terrace) and 120 euros in the front row.
• Special occasion: the two 2-star tables, Le Jules Verne and L'Oiseau Blanc, as well as the Ducasse sur Seine cruise.
